St Brigid's Mini Vinnies
We are so grateful to the wonderful students at St Brigid’s Primary School in Gisbourne for donating a staggering 400kg of food. They did such a fantastic job they even made the Gazette!
Here is an exert for the magazine written by Eleni Schneider, a year 6 student at St Brigid’s:
Recently at St Brigid’s Primary School, the 'Mini Vinnies' ran a food drive in which they encouraged students to bring non-perishable food and sanitary items to school. We put tubs in every classroom for the donations and even made a friendly competition to see which class could collect the most items. The purpose of this event was to raise awareness of the less fortunate in and around our community and make them feel equal. We will donate all items brought in to an organisation called Foodbank, and hope that we can help others with our items.
This year we have collected 905 donations altogether and one of the senior classes won the competition with 321 items at the end of the four-week period. On Wednesday 2 July, the Mini Vinnies held a hot chocolate stall to warm up the community in the morning. The hot chocolates were delicious and we were able to accommodate those with dietary requirements. Students welcomed families at the gates with a fun and exciting chant encouraging them to get a hot chocolate with yummy marshmallows.
We proudly raised $412 and $200 in profit. All funds raised will go towards our next project: homelessness help-packs for those in need.
